Tight noose after long rope
6/9/2009 10:11:58 PM
The police crackdown on the hardliners in the separatist camp in which over 20 senior separatists including Syed Ali Shah Geelani were arrested was the result of directions from the central Government. Well the centre suggested to the state Government to deal firmly with those trying to foment unrest and violence after a central team led by Additional Secretary Internal security had conveyed to the union Home Ministry that the state administration had taken a soft view of the activities of separatists with the result majority of people in the valley had been subjected to inconvenience because of prolonged shutdown and clashes between the protesters and the police. The State Government, especially the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had preferred a wait and watch policy. Inside reports say that Omar Abdullah did not want to retaliate as he wanted to prove himself a leader with lot of patience, a chief Minister with love for true democratic practices. He had thought that a day was not far off when the separatists would not receive much support from a section of people to their call for Bandhs and marches to Eidgah or Shopian. In fact Omar ordered the crackdown unwillingly and that too when he had been told that the very image of the ruling coalition was at its stake. The centre was worried over the developments in Kashmir and the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi sent Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz to Srinagar for persuading Omar Abdullah to act fast against those trying to disrupt peace in the valley. Omar's assessment of the situation was not wrong. Syed Ali Shah Geelani may have received a negative feedback which was responsible for him to announce calling off shutdown from Tuesday. The week-long shutdown had to be culminated by staging a march to Shopian. However, the stern steps taken by the security forces foiled separatists attempt at staging a march from various areas of the valley to Shopian where two women had been raped and murdered. The issue against which the separatists roared and ranted was highly emotive. Omar has been right because he gave a chance to the separatists and their supporters to give vent to their anger. Whether on his own or under the guidance of the centre the ruling coalition has demonstrated that whenever required it could deal firmly with those attempting at destabilising peace. If the separatists and their supporters are annoyed with the measures taken by the Omar led Government for foiling the march to Shopian those connected with tourism seem to be happy. They were dismayed over the turn of events which had hit the tourist traffic again. Now they hope the flow of tourists to the valley will increase
