| NC,PDP and APHC leaders happy over Manmohan Singh’s willingness to talk to people of Kashmir | | | Srinagar,September 25 :-If not the people, atleast leaders of the All Party Hurriyat Conference, the National Conference and the PDP seem to be excited over the recent statement of Prime Minister,Dr Manmohan Singh, suggesting that he was willing to discuss all the issues, including autonomy and self-rule,with the people of Kashmir. A senior APHC leader,Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, told Kashmir Independent Press on Monday “it is good if the Prime Minister is willing to talk to the people of Kashmir.” He said “talks and sustained talks alone can show the way out of the vexed Kashmir issue.” Prof. Bhat said that talks on autonomy and self-rule,the former being the slogan of the National Conference and the latter the idea of the PDP,”can be a sort of addressing internal dimensions of the Kashmir issue.” He said that for addressing the external as well as the internal dimensions of the issue Delhi-Islamabad dialogue has to be speeded up and there was need for involving representatives of Kashmiris in the dialogue at an appropriate time.” Hurriyat leaders are happy because they feel that Prime Minister’s willingness to talk to people of Kashmir was in response to a statement made recently by the party chairman,Molvi Umar Farooq, who wanted Dr Manmohan Singh to discuss the issues pertaining to the Kashmir problem with people of the valley. The PDP leadership is in an upbeat mood because it feels that Dr Manmohan Singh had not rejected outrightly the idea of self-rule.The party leadership is of the view that once it made its report on self-rule public the Government of India would find that this idea was far better than the slogan of autonomy raised by the National Conference. On the other hand the National Conference leaders feel that their demand for the restoration of greater autonomy is in the mind of the Government of India. The party leaders are of the opinion that nothing short of the restoration of greater autonomy could be a viable solution for the Kashmir issue. However, the Hurriyat leaders do not agree either with the PDP’s self-rule idea nor with the slogan of the National Conference for restoring to the state autonomy that had been eroded. Molvi Abbas Ansari a former APHC chairman said “had greater autonomy the magic to bury the Kashmir issue the problem would have ended before 1952 when the state enjoyed a greater degree of autonomy. The PDP leadership is critical of the autonomy song because it had not found favour in Jammu and Ladakh regions. But the National Conference leadership is of the view that greater autonomy with a dose of internal autonomy in the shape of establishing regional councils for Jammu,Ladakh and Kashmir could be an ideal solution. Political observers are of the opinion that if the Hurriyat leaders accepted Dr Manmohan Singh’s offer for talks it would result in a tussle between the APHC stand and between the National Conference and the PDP. |
