| Governor stresses expansion of Red Cross | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, JUNE 10: Highlighting the stupendous role of the Indian Red Cross in providing laudable service to the distressed people in the hour of need, the Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra and the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah have emphasized on re-energization of the Red Cross at all levels and on generating public awareness about its role and activities. They said that the area of coverage and ambit of the activities of the Red Cross should be further expanded to cover more and more areas in the sectors of healthcare and social welfare. The Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing the 164th Managing Committee and Annual General Meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), J&K State Branch, here today. They also laid emphasis on larger involvement of NGOs, private sector, industry and business and the people at large in the activities of the Red Cross across the State. Minister for Health, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma, Chief Secretary, Mr. S. S. Kapur, Financial Commissioner, Home, Mr. Verghese Samuel, Director General of Police, Mr. Kuldeep Khoda, Administrative Secretaries, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Deputy Commissioners, senior civil, police and security forces officers, Honourary General Secretary, IRCS, J&K State Branch, Mr. Feroze Ahmad and members of its Managing Committee participated in the meeting. Referring to the two-day training programme organized by the J&K IRCS at Patnitop in November last for Family News Service (FNS) volunteers, the Governor said that we must make full use of this service which enables the people separated from their families due to natural disasters and migration to reunite with their families He also exhorted J&K’s FNS to establish linkages with the reputed NGOs, both in Kashmir and Jammu Divisions, to enable the people to optimally benefit from this initiative. He also appreciated the creation of State Disaster Response Team of J&K IRCS and stressed the need for building up such teams in all the districts of the State. The Governor appreciated the discernible improvement made in enhancing the collections for launching various activities of the Red Cross and called for bringing further improvement in it. He called for launching active membership drives for raising funds for the Red Cross from all possible sources including industry, Government employees and philanthropic organisations. He asked the Deputy Commissioners to ensure that hundred percent collection of Red Cross fund is made by the educational institutions and deposited in time with the Red Cross units. He added that the organisations like Red Cross must operate in an extremely transparent manner, as these deal with public money. He said that there should be proper assessment of mobilization of resources and judicious utilization of funds, which should be done efficiently and on need-based grounds. He called for formulating an Action Plan of the activities of the Red Cross and reviewing its implementation on monthly basis. He also asked for completing the audited budget accounts of all the units of Red Cross in the State by July this year. Referring to the preparation of the Detailed Project Report for construction of Red Cross building in Srinagar, the Governor asked the General Secretary of IRCS, J&K Branch to get the project going expeditiously.
