| Zardari plays prank on nuke safety | | | Pakistan President,Asif Ali Zardari, has stated that if democracy"fails" in the country and the world refused to help Islamabad the nuclear arsenal could fall in the hands of the Talibans. But at the same time he has said that nuclear capabality of Pakistan was in safe hands and all important installations and weaponary were under extra security cover. In fact fears have been mounting on the safety of nuclear arsenal in Pakistan following stepup in the activities of terrorists, especially the Talibans in Pakistan. It was on May 5 last that Zardari flew to the United States to calm down the American fears over the safety of the nuclear devices in Pakistan.During his American visit Zardari had assured the US Government that nuclear weapons were quite safe and there was hardly any possibility that these nuclear arsenals would fall in the hands of terrorists.Even then the US sanctioned funds for helping pakistan in upgrading the security grid around the place where the nuclear weapons had been stored.Unfortunately the American Government had received reports that Pakistan Government, which had been faced with unprecedented financial problems, had misused the financial aid meant for improving the security cover for preventing terrorists from gaining control of the nukes. The May visit was almost a summon from the US government to Zardari and senior Army and ISI functionaries so that they could reassure the American administration that the nuclear arsenal was safe. What events have taken place in Pakistan in recent days that Zardari has been forced to express fears that the nuclear arsenal could fall in the hands of the Talibans if democracy failed.Well if the reports from Islamabad are to be relied on the Pakistani troops have mounted pressure on the Talibans in the Swat valley and adjoining areas.Besides ground aerial strikes too were being carried out against the Talibans but the menace of the Talibans is yet to be over.Zardari has admitted that as a result of their numerical strength and better weaponary the Talibans were yet to be rooted out of some districts in NWFP.Well even if one t alks to a layman about ZXardari's recent statement one will feel surprised because survival of democracy in Pakistan has no link with the safety of the nuclear weapons.Pakistan was under the military rule for over nine years but the nuclear weapons did not fall in the hands of terrorists. How could that happen when the safety of the nuclear arsenals is in the hands of the Army and Air Force.By dishing out threats that nuclear arsenal may fall in the hands of the Talibans if the world did not support Pakistan and if democracy failed is a political prank that Zardari wishes to play to ensure that no attempt was made by the Army to stage a coup.If not everybody atleast the Army in Pakistan may not be the buyers of Zardari's new philosophy.
