| All India Backward Classes Federation felicitates Dr Rohit Gupta, submits memorandum on OBC issues in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 2: The All India Backward Classes Federation (J&K Unit) today felicitated senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Dr. Rohit Gupta on his recent joining of the party and expressed confidence that he would actively raise the concerns of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community at appropriate forums. On the occasion, a delegation of the Federation led by its office bearers presented Dr. Gupta with a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as a mark of respect and also submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting several long-pending issues affecting the OBC community in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Federation urged Dr. Gupta to take up these matters with the Government of India and the concerned ministries for their early resolution. Among the key demands raised were the removal of the 'Rural Only' tag from four OBC castes-Barbers, Teelis, Potters (Kumahars) and Washermen-in the Central OBC list, stating that the Jammu and Kashmir Government had already recommended the necessary corrections to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2023, but the matter is still pending. The memorandum also sought the removal of the mandatory current income certificate requirement for issuance of OBC certificates, recommending that the prescribed three-year average income criterion be followed instead. The Federation further demanded adequate representation of OBC members in recruitment bodies such as JKPSC and JKSSB, commencement of the sanctioned Dogri Department at the Central University of Jammu, and inclusion of a separate OBC column in the ongoing Census. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rohit Gupta assured the Federation that the concerns of the OBC community are genuine and deserve immediate attention. He said he would take up the issues with the concerned authorities and strive for their early and just resolution. Dr. Gupta reiterated that every section of society must receive its rightful constitutional and legal entitlements without discrimination. Prominent members of the Federation present on the occasion included F.C. Satia (President), Balwant Kataria (General Secretary), Kewal Krishan Votra (Vice President), Om Kataria (Vice President) and Joginder Angotra, along with other representatives of the OBC community. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks and a reaffirmation of the Federation's commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of backward classes in Jammu and Kashmir. |
