Sadhotra slams BJP for its biggest betrayal by denying Statehood to J&K
7/2/2026 11:10:40 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 2: National Conference Additional General Secretary and Former Minister Mr. Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today accused the BJP of committing its biggest political betrayal by denying the people of Jammu and Kashmir the restoration of statehood despite repeated assurances.
"Continued delay in statehood has gravely eroded public faith in democracy and exposed the BJP's politics of deceit and deception", Mr Sadhotra said while addressing a public meeting at Sanan Ghat Basohli Asssembly Constituency which was organized by Raja Rafiq Block President Basohli, Madan Lal Ex-Sarpanch and Pawan Kumar Ex-Naib Sarpanch.
Mr. Sadhotra said that even after the people overwhelmingly participated in the democratic process and elected a popular government led by Chief Minister Jenab Omar Abdullah, the BJP-led Central Government has chosen to retain dual control over governance, reducing the elected government to functioning with limited authority.
"The people exercised their democratic right with the hope that their mandate would be respected and their aspirations fulfilled. Instead, the BJP has weakened democratic institutions by refusing to restore full statehood and by continuing with an arrangement that politically disempowers the people of Jammu and Kashmir," he said.
The people of Jammu and Kashmir are not demanding anything out of box but it is all which BJP government has promised inside the Parliament at the time of abrogation of 370 and also before the Hon'ble Supreme Court. He said our country is the largest democracy in the world but it is unfortunate that for Assembly Elections people of Jammu and Kashmir approached Hon'ble Supreme Court for their democratic right of elections. Only then Assembly Elections were held and now for statehood National Conference led by Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah have to protest in front of Parliament at Delhi.
Mr. Sadhotra asserted that the denial of statehood is not merely an administrative issue but an assault on the dignity, identity and democratic rights of the people. He said people across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region, feel deeply disappointed after witnessing the BJP's failure to honour its repeated commitments.
He said the people of Jammu had extended unprecedented support to the BJP during the 2024 Assembly Elections, believing its assurances on restoring statehood, strengthening democratic institutions and protecting the interests of the region. Instead of honouring that trust, the BJP has rewarded the people with the worst form of political betrayal. Those who voted for the BJP with great expectations today feel deceived and let down,he said.
Mr. Sadhotra said the growing public anger against the BJP is a natural outcome of its repeated failures and unfulfilled promises.
"People now realise that the BJP has failed Jammu and Kashmir on every front. Whether it is restoration of statehood, democratic empowerment, protection of regional aspirations or respect for the people's mandate, the BJP has consistently chosen political expediency over public interest," he added.
