| Pak policy in PoK exposed by human right watchdog report | | | New Delhi | September 25,
JKLF Diplomatic Committee Chairman Shabir Choudhry today said the US-based Human Rights Watch report on human rights violations in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) has exposed Islamabad's policy of ''oppression and exploitation'' in the area.
''We know what Pakistani agencies and bureaucracy are doing in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and in Gilgit and Baltistan and how they oppress and exploit us,'' Dr Choudhry said in a statement.
He said people of PoK are of the ''view that Pakistani control is illegal and against the their wishes''.
''We have been raising our voice against the unjust treatment .... but now an internationally renowned human rights body, after detailed research and analyses has said same thing. This proves that our research, analyses and contacts on the ground were correct,'' he added.
The human rights watchdog on September 21 accused Pakistani security forces of using torture and other rights abuses in PoK.
''Most incidents of politically motivated torture recorded by Human Rights Watch involved the ISI, or the police acting on the military's behalf,'' the report said referring to the military's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
In the 71-page report, HRW noted that there had been a reduction in infiltration of Islamist militants into Kashmir, but it was still taking place.
Dr Choudhry said the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit and Baltistan want to live in peace and freedom.
''Pakistan likes to point finger of blame to India for human rights violations, but completely ignore its obligations in PoK,'' he added.
Dr Shabir Choudhry said human rights organisations have little knowledge and documentation about abuses in PoK.
He urged other human rights organisations to visit areas of Giligit and Baltistan and prepare reports on human rights abuse over there. |
