| BETWEEN CHANCE, CHOICE & VICE CHANCELLORS | | Falling political standards worrying: Azad | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 11: On second day of his felicitation ceremonies in Jammu, the Congress veteran and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today handpicked two Vice Chancellors for company on his either sides as he went on adore robes of all colours –green to saffron –being presented by old and many new found admirers. The occasion was an honour ceremony organized by Jammu Unity Forum led by Congress leader Janak Raj Gupta. Gupta was incidentally Advisor to Azad during his tenure as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Nearly half of the gathering on the occasion comprised those prominent faces that led the Amarnath land agitation these months last year and burnt hundreds of meters of cloth in burning effigies of all signs of government –with Azad being the target. When Union Health Minister arrived at the Jammu Club’s fall where hundreds of people were taking seats, he had a quick look at the audience and then followed a quick decision. Two conspicuously non-political faces in the gathering –Jammu University Vice Chancellor Varun Sahni and his Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University counterpart Masud Chaudhary –immediately caught Azad’s intelligent attention and he took them to dais and made them to take seats on his either sides. Then followed the series of receiving bouquets, robes and saropas. With Varun and Chaudhary on sides a warm greeting from Mahant Rameshwar of Purani Mandi temple –a fiery leader of Amarnath land row –appeared a quite balanced act. In his address, the Union Health Minister expressed his serious concern over the money and selfishness overtaking the very institution of politics and public life. “People have become very ambitious and they are ready to do anything for achieving their goals”, he said. He called upon the wise in the society to help keep healthy trends in politics by isolating and defeating the politicians with vested interests. Earlier in the morning, Azad took stock of ongoing construction work of super speciality block of Government medical college hospital at Resham Ghar colony. Madan Lal Sharma accompanied him during his early morning visit to the new emergency block of the GMC and under-construction GMC super specialty wing of the hospital. After making an on the spot inspection of the prestigious hospital project built at a cost of Rs 120 crore union health minister said that the pace of work was very slow and only 10 percent work has been completed in the last one year after his departure from the state. Azad said that it will be hs endeavour to see that the construction work on the upgradation work at a cost of Rs 120 crore was completed by this year end. He said upgradation of the Srinaagr based government medical college hospital would be completed next year. He said CPWD , the executing agency of the project will have to double their effort to complete the construction work on time.
