3-day Sindhu Darshan Festival begins at Leh

Leh: June 12, 2009: The Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah said that Sindhu Darshan festival is playing a good role in promoting tourism in Ladakh and stressed for creating more awareness about Ladakh’s rich art, culture and ethos.
He was speaking at Sindhu Ghat Leh today after inaugurating the Sindhu Darshan Festival. Mr. Omar Abdullah said that Ladakh’s vast tourism potential should be showcased to the world to attract more and more tourists to Ladakh and this would besides giving fillip to its art and culture, would promote the economy in the region as well.Pointing towards some more tourism promotional measures, the Chief Minister stressed over the need to make easy access to Ladakh by enhancing the frequencies of air services, making the procedure of Inner-line permit flexible, opening of Kailash-Mansarowar Pilgrimage road etc. He said that the State Govt. has again raised the issue of opening Kailash Yatra road with the Union Home Minister Mr. Chitambaram and said that the Central Govt. would further take up this issue with the China Govt.
Mr. Abdullah said that Ladakh will see a tremendous development in tourism sector within next few years under the dynamic minister-ship of Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora. He further said that Ladakh’s power potential in Solar, Hydro and Geo-thermal would also get a new boost at the hands of Dr. Farooq Abdullah who holds the Renewable Energy Ministry at Center.Welcoming the Chief Minister and other guests at the Sindhu Festival, The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Mr. Chering Dorje disclosed that Sindhu Festival is proving a boon for pulling up domestic tourists to Ladakh year after year. Among the 75,000 tourists visited Ladakh last year, the majority of them were domestic tourists, he added. Mr. Dorje put forth few demands to the Chief Minister including adding of more frequencies in air services to Ladakh from April, making the inner-line permit procedure simple and flexible for the convenient of tourists, opening a Nubra Development Authority for Nubra region on the pattern of Zanskar Development Authority in Kargil, granting of adequate funds for early establishment of Central Asia Museum at Leh etc. Mr. Dorje hoped that Ladakh will get utmost attention and financial assistance for promotion of tourism from the State Govt. under the minister-ship of Tourism Minister Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora.Addressing at the function, the J&K Art, Culture and Tourism Minister, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora said that the main two aims of celebrating this festival was to pay homage to the Indus river that gave birth to a glorious civilization and the another purpose of the festival was to stretch the tourist season in Ladakh. Expressing satisfaction over achieving both the objectives, Mr. Jora said that tourism is like the economic backbone for the State and as such State Govt. giving top priority to this sector. He stressed for promotion of domestic tourists for sustainable and prolong development.Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages presented a sizzling cultural programme on the occasion in which the diverse folk dance were showcased which added to the grandeur and glamour of the event.
The Political Advisor to CM, Mr. Verinder Rana, the Executive Councilors of LAHDC, Mr. Tsering Wangchuk, Mr, Dorje Stanzin, Mr, Mohd. Khan and Mr, Stanzin Phuntsog , the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. AK Sahu, The SSP, Leh , the GOC were among the hundred of guests present in the inaugural function of Sindhu Festival.
To mark the occasion, a scintillating cultural programme was presented by the artists of different regions of the State.
