The startup culture in Jammu and Kashmir is gaining popularity with each passing day and the government is encouraging young people to come forward with their innovative ideas.
While addressing the ASCEND 2026 Startup Summit in Srinagar Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the summit as a vibrant platform where ideas, innovation, investment, mentorship and government policy converge to foster entrepreneurship and accelerate economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks underline this changing reality.
Jammu and Kashmir possesses immense untapped potential for startups. Its strengths extend beyond the conventional technology sector. Agriculture, horticulture, tourism, handicrafts, food processing, renewable energy, healthcare, education and digital services all offer fertile ground for innovation. The region’s world-famous apples, saffron, dry fruits, carpets and handicrafts can benefit enormously from technology-driven solutions in packaging, branding, logistics and e-commerce. Likewise, tourism startups can leverage digital platforms, artificial intelligence and sustainable tourism models to enhance visitor experiences while preserving the region’s fragile ecology.
Government support is playing an increasingly important role in nurturing this ecosystem. Startup policies, incubation centres, financial assistance, skill development programmes and easier access to credit are encouraging young innovators to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. Institutions of higher learning are also beginning to establish innovation and incubation centres, helping students transform academic knowledge into commercially viable products and services. Such initiatives are gradually replacing the traditional mindset that success depends solely on securing government employment.
Besides youngsters its equally important to encourage women entrepreneurs and innovators from rural areas. Their participation can significantly expand the region’s entrepreneurial base and generate inclusive economic growth. Universities, colleges and schools should actively promote entrepreneurship through innovation clubs, startup competitions and practical business education so that entrepreneurial thinking becomes part of the educational culture.
The success of Jammu and Kashmir’s startup movement should ultimately be measured not only by the number of registered startups but by their ability to generate sustainable employment, create wealth and solve local problems through innovation. Every successful startup has the potential to become a job creator, reducing unemployment and strengthening the local economy.
