| Bhalla seeks compensation in lieu of Indus Water Treaty losses | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 13: The state unit of the Congress has called for review of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 so that Jammu and Kashmir was not subjected to lot of losses on account of limitations the Treaty has imposed on the use of river waters for power generation and lift irrigation In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in Delhi today a senior Congress leader, Raman Bhalla, said that despite the potential of the state for generating 20,000 MW of electricity the Government had been able to generate 2318 MWs. The memorandum wanted the centre to assist the state in the construction of major hydel power projects so that people were not forced to suffer prolonged power cuts and industries did not face losses on account of interrupted power supply. The Memorandum sought Prime Minister's help in compensating to Jammu and Kashmir the losses it faced on account of the Indus Water Treaty. Bhalla has informed the Prime Minister that about Rs.6, 000 crores were the annual losses and in view of the acute financial stringency the state faced the centre should help the state by way of releasing the compensation in lieu of losses incurred on account of the Treaty.
