| Sadhotra condemns Kulgam terror attack; seeks time-bound probe, exemplary punishment for perpetrators | | |  Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 1: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today strongly condemned the selective killing in the Kulgam of Chhattisgarh labourers in terror attack, describing it as a barbaric and inhuman act aimed at spreading fear and disturbing peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, Sadhotra demanded a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation to bring the perpetrators, conspirators and their handlers to justice. Expressing profound grief over the loss of life, Mr. Sadhotra conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul. He said terrorism is a menace that has no place in a civilized society and must be fought with resolve and determination. Sadhotra sought exemplary punishment for those responsible for the heinous crime, saying such acts strike at the very foundations of humanity and cannot be allowed to go unpunished.
Sadhotra endorsed the observations made by National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah that whenever the legitimate and democratic demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir gains momentum, incidents of terror tend to occur, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. He said the timing of such incidents naturally raises serious concerns that warrant a comprehensive and credible investigation.
Referring to the recent martyrdom of a police head constable in Anantnag and the latest attack in Kulgam, Mr. Sadhotra said these incidents have once again exposed the continuing security challenges despite repeated official assertions that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has substantially improved. He said that although people have gradually lost faith in investigations into several major terror incidents, including the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks, it remains imperative that the truth behind every terrorist strike comes to light. "
The people deserve answers. Justice can be meaningful only when investigations are transparent, credible and inspire public confidence," he said. Mr. Sadhotra questioned the repeated claims of complete normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of recurring terrorist attacks. He said the recent incidents raise serious questions about the prevailing security situation and called upon the concerned to explain how such attacks continue to occur despite elaborate security arrangements.
He said the Lieutenant Governor owes answers to the people over the spurt in terror incidents, particularly at a time when the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is underway and a comprehensive security grid is stated to be in place. Expressing concern over the attacks in Anantnag and Kulgam, Mr. Sadhotra called for undertaking a realistic assessment of the security apparatus, identify any operational shortcomings and take effective corrective measures to ensure that innocent lives are protected.
He also demanded adequate compensation and all possible assistance to the family of the martyr, saying no amount of compensation can replace a precious life but it is the responsibility of the government to stand firmly with the bereaved family in their hour of grief.
Reiterating National Conference's commitment to peace, communal harmony and democratic values, Mr. Sadhotra said terrorism has to be defeated collectively and decisively. He urged all sections of society to remain united against the forces that seek to disrupt peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir while ensuring that every act of terror is investigated thoroughly and every guilty person is brought to justice. |
