Rooftop Solar Energy: Lucknow ranks first in country
8/1/2026 10:40:43 PM
Early Times Report

Lucknow, Aug 1: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has achieved another milestone in clean and green energy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, the state has delivered an outstanding performance in the campaign to take rooftop solar energy to every household, securing the inclusion of 17 of its districts in the list of the country’s top 100 districts. This achievement not only reflects the rapid expansion of solar energy across the state but also stands as evidence of Uttar Pradesh’s strong progress towards energy self-reliance.
During this period, UPNEDA Director Ravinder Singh stated, “The state capital, Lucknow, has retained the distinction of being the country’s No. 1 district with the installation of 1,24,167 rooftop solar plants. This achievement has been made possible due to the large-scale adoption of rooftop solar by households in Lucknow. Meanwhile, Varanasi has also delivered a remarkable performance by securing the 10th position in the country.”
He further added that the positive impact of the campaign promoting solar energy in the Prime Minister’s parliamentary constituency is clearly visible. In addition, Kanpur Nagar has reached the 14th position, setting a new benchmark for the adoption of green energy among the state’s industrial cities.
The inclusion of 17 districts of Uttar Pradesh among the country’s top 100 districts demonstrates the rapidly increasing awareness, government support, and impact of various schemes promoting rooftop solar in the state.
Through the effective implementation of State Government and Central Government schemes, especially the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, lakhs of consumers are being connected to solar energy.
The expansion of rooftop solar installations is enabling people to achieve significant savings on electricity bills, while also providing them with an opportunity to earn financial benefits by supplying surplus electricity to the grid. This is promoting clean energy generation, reducing carbon emissions and strengthening environmental conservation.
Uttar Pradesh continues to accelerate rooftop solar installations in the country. Public awareness campaigns by the state government, simplification of the online application process, time-bound approvals, better coordination among discoms and related agencies, and an effective subsidy disbursement system have given fresh momentum to this campaign. At the current pace of rooftop solar installations in Uttar Pradesh, the state is poised to emerge as the country’s largest hub for clean energy in the coming years.
The presence of 17 districts from Uttar Pradesh among the country’s top 100 districts, along with Lucknow’s continued No. 1 ranking, is a clear indication that Uttar Pradesh is leading the green energy revolution.
