Separatist top brass still under restrictions

Srinagar, June 14: Senior leader of Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference, Hakeem Abdur Rashid was released on Saturday evening, however the Chairmen of Hurriyat factions, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yasin Malik and at two dozen pro-freedom leaders continue to remain under house arrest or have been arrested.
State authorities had launched a major crackdown over the pro-freedom leaders following the dual rape and murder of Shopian women allegedly by troopers last month. The incident sparked massive pro-freedom and anti-India demonstrations resulting in death to a youth while hundreds were injured.
Executive body member of Hurriyat Conference (M), Hakeem Abdur Rashid was released on Saturday evening after being house arrest for more than eighteen consecutive days.
“Last evening, police informed me that the restrictions have been lifted and I’m free to move. CRPF troops and police manning my residence were also withdrawn,” Rashid said.
“For eighteen days I was confined to my residence. Fort the first time in my life I could not offer congregational Friday prayers on three occasions,” he added.
Hurriyat Conference (G), Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to remain under preventive custody at high security zone Cheshmashahi for ninth consecutive day. He was arrested on June 6, from his Hyderpora residence and lodged at Cheshmashahi.

Hurriyat Conference (G) Spokesman, Ayaz Akbar that Geelani continues to remain under custody at Cheshmashahi security zone. Akbar said that close aide of Geelani, Mohammad Ashraf Sahrai last week was arrested and shifted to Jammu jail.
“Geelani sahib continues to remain under police custody at Cheshmashahi. For six consecutive days, his whereabouts were unknown,” Akbar said, adding “Last week Geelani sahib’s son was allowed to meet him for brief period.”
Hurriyat spokesman said that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai and al least a dozen leaders have been arrested and shifted to various jails.
Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesman, Syed Salim Geelani who is continuously under house arrest told Press Bureau of India that many senior leaders of the pro-freedom conglomerate have been arrested while the party Chairman continues to remain under house arrest.
