| Old city protest Shopian dual rape, murder 12 injured in Sunday clashes | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 14: Hundreds of people on Sunday staged demonstrations in many parts of the old city to protest the dual rape and murder of Shopian women and the continued detention of pro-freedom leaders. At least a dozen people including several policemen suffered injuries in violent protests and clashes. Reports reaching Press Bureau of India said that Sunday afternoon, hundreds of people mainly youth took to streets at old city areas of Safa Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Kawdara, Saraf Kadal and other parts of old city and staged demonstrations to protest the continued detention of pro-freedom leaders and the rape and murder of Shopian women allegedly by troopers. Chanting “We want Freedom,” “Islam Zindabad,” “Release the pro-freedom leaders,”, “Punish the killers of Nilofer and Asiya,” and anti-India slogans, the protesters were demanding immediate release of the pro-freedom leaders and strict punishment for the persons responsible for the rape and murder of Shopian women. As the protesters tried to march on the old city streets, paramilitary troops and policemen deployed in strength resorted to cane charge besides firing scores of tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. In retaliation, the protesters pelted stones on CRPF and policemen triggering fierce clashes that continued till late Sunday evening. Sources told Press Bureau of India that at least twelve people including several policemen were injured in the pitched battles.
