| Clouds hang over Amarnath Yatra, weather plays spoilsport | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 14: As the annual Amarnath yatra is scheduled to begin from today, the weather has once again taken a turn for the worse as fresh snowfall has been witnessed at Sonamarg and upper reaches of Pahalgam making the tracks even more vulnerable for trekking. Reports reaching Press Bureau of India said that officials of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board SASB, that manages the Yatra are a baffled lot as the yatra was given a go ahead from the Baltal route from Tuesday, however, the first lot of yatris is scheduled to leave Jammu on Monday. “What is of more concern to us is the safty of pilgrims as the Baltal route has been witnessing fresh snowfall from Sunday morning,” an official of the SASB told PBI. "We hope the yatra starts tomorrow and the weather conditions do improve make the route safe for the yatris,” the official added. Interestingly, the annual Amarnath yatra was rescheduled on June 7 this month owing to fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of the Himalayas where the holy cave is situated. The yatra was given a go ahead from the Baltal route only as the decision on opening the Pahalgam track for the yatra will be taken on June 22nd. Sources said that the yatra is likely to get delayed by another couple of days as the Baltal track has become very slippery because of the fresh snowfall and rains. The SASB has issued a strict advisory to pilgrims to wear only trousers, not saris or dhotis, during the pilgrimage that involves trekking on the Himalayan heights that are slippery and involves a lot of risk. Pilgrims were advised to carry with them umbrellas, torches, walking sticks, woollen clothing, and vital medicines. The elderly and children have been asked to "rethink" about their journey plans.
