NAHAN (HP), Aug 24: Two among five children who had gone to bathe in a rivulet in Sirmaur district drowned while three children were rescued by the Puruwala police with the help of local residents, police said on Monday.
Five children from the nearby Nihalgarh area had gone to bathe in Jambukhala in Paonta subdivision on Sunday evening. One kid suddenly went into deep water while bathing and started drowning. While trying to save him, the other child also drowned.
Upon receiving information about the incident, a team from the Puruwala police reached the spot and, with the help of local residents, rescued Rohit (9), Siddharth (9), and Ankur (8) and handed them over to their families. However, Jabir (9), son of Anwar, resident of Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh and Satyam (8), son of Sikandar, resident of Samastipur in Bihar, both currently living in Nihalgarh village, drowned.
Paonta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manvendra Singh Thakur, who also arrived at the spot and supervised the rescue operation, said that with the help of local divers, a search for the missing Satyam and Jabir began in the dark in Jambukhala using torchlight.
After considerable effort, their bodies were recovered from the deep Kund. Both were rushed to Paonta Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared them dead, he added.
The bodies of both children have been kept at the Civil Hospital in Paonta Sahib for post-mortem examination and will be handed over to their families after the post-mortem.
Further investigations are underway, the police added. |
