SRINAGAR, Aug 26: National Conference General Secretary Haji Ali Mohammad Sagar on Wednesday cautioned political parties and self-styled leaders against attempting to rewrite their political record through political theatrics and crocodile tears, asserting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are fully aware of those who betrayed their trust, compromised their interests and contributed to the erosion of the region's political, constitutional and democratic rights.
Addressing a meeting at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Sagar said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have made immense sacrifices for the establishment and strengthening of democracy, eradication of illiteracy, spread of education, creation of constitutional and democratic institutions and development of the healthcare sector. He said these struggles and sacrifices form an integral part of the region's political history and must be preserved in the collective memory, particularly among the younger generation.
He said the future of Jammu and Kashmir rests in the hands of its youth and therefore it is imperative for them to remain well acquainted with the region's history, its political identity and the struggles that shaped its social and political landscape.
"Those who sacrificed for the people, those who fought against poverty, deprivation and illiteracy, and those who strengthened democratic institutions cannot be erased from history by political propaganda. Our youth must know who stood with the people in difficult times and who chose convenience and power over their interests," Sagar said.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have endured some of the most difficult phases of their history, facing every challenge with courage, steadfastness and determination. Referring to August 5, 2019, he said a grave injustice was inflicted upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir when New Delhi undermined the constitutional and historic relationship under which the erstwhile state had acceded to India.
Sagar said the National Conference, with the continued support of the people, would persist with its struggle for the restoration of the legitimate rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, irrespective of how long the struggle takes.
"One day or the other, New Delhi will have to correct its mistakes. History cannot be rewritten through administrative orders, political rhetoric or attempts to suppress the voice. |
