| Delhi Mayor orders more machinery to expedite clearing of Bhalswa landfill | | | Early Times Report
New Delhi, Aug 29: Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Saturday directed officials to deploy additional machinery at the Bhalswa landfill to expedite biomining and ensure that the remaining legacy waste is cleared within the stipulated timeframe.
Inspecting the landfill site and reviewing the ongoing remediation work, Wahi said only around 4-5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste remained at the dumpsite, according to an official statement.
Around 15,000 tonnes of waste is currently being processed daily at the site, he said, directing officials to step up the pace of operations by deploying more machines.
Wahi also directed officials to double the current pace of processing fresh waste accumulating at the landfill, saying its disposal would gain further momentum after September, the statement read.
Work on setting up a waste-to-energy plant at the site is underway and would further aid the disposal of waste, he said.
The inert material recovered during processing is being used to fill low-lying areas, according to the mayor’s office.
Bhalswa is among Delhi’s three major legacy dumpsites, along with Ghazipur and Okhla, where biomining and remediation work is being carried out to clear accumulated waste and reclaim land.
The MCD had earlier informed Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal during his visit to Bhalswa that 99.07 lakh tonnes of legacy waste had been remediated at the site till July 31. |
