Process initiated for finding Masud’s successor at BGSBU
6/16/2009 12:10:26 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 15: Months after pioneering institution builder Masud Chaudhary indicted his desire to call it a day at the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, the government has set into motion a process for appointment of a new Vice Chancellor; nevertheless Masud getting another extension is not ruled out.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his capacity as Chancellor of the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has nominated Financial Commissioner Planning and Development to the yet to be formed committee for search of a new Vice Chancellor. The move has, however, not gone well with the sections of political and academic spectrum in the Kashmir Valley as many have objected to the appointment of a non-Muslim to the search panel of a Wakf funded University.
Sources told Early Times that Masud, the founder Vice Chancellor of the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University had conveyed to the Governor late last year and the Chief Minister (Chancellor) earlier this year his desire to hang boots. However, the Chief Minister was reported to have indicated him to stick on for the while. His present term comes to a close towards end of this year.
Earlier also, Masud had written to the then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad about his willingness to step down if the state government could pursue with the Center for Central University status for Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University.
Masud, it may be recalled here, was appointed as Project Director and Chief Executive of the BGSB University by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government in 2004 while he was Additional Director General of Police. Upon his retirement he was formally appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of the University. He set a rare record of sorts by rolling out first academic session of the University barely seven months after its foundation stone was laid by the Chief Minister at a mountainous ridge which was yet to be connected by road.
A month after his visit to the campus, Mufti’s predecessor Ghulam Nabi Azad remarked at a public meeting at Rajouri that Jammu and Kashmir could excel in infrastructure development in the country if the state had somebody like Masud Chaudhary as Works Minister.
While the infrastructure development set exceptional precedents, the academic standards and placement results touched many heights. On his visit to the campus as Chancellor, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was impressed over the academic environment. The University recently launched its PhD Programme to overwhelming response.
Interestingly, a search panel for the appointment of new Vice Chancellor for Islamic University of Science and Technonoly, at Awantipora, had submitted its report nearly six months back but there is no follow-up yet.
