| Separatists playing dubious role | | | That the hardliners in the separatist camp, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, seem to be obsessed with the Kashmir issue became, once again, evident when on Monday the Geelani camp announced its week-long calender for agitations and protest demonstrations in the Kashmir valley. This time the calendar does not refer to the rape and murder of two women in Shopian. The calendar has no reference to any human rights violations. The calendar is candid in making it known that the agitation will continue till Kashmir wins "Azadi." If one reads between the lines contents of the calendar one will realise that the way the separatists shed tears over the rape and murder of two women in Shopian were crocodile in nature. How so ?If the separatists' heart really bled over the Shopian incident they should not have mentioned anything about Azadi in the calendar. They could have said that the agitation will continue till human rights violations and excesses by the security forces were not halted. This way one may be tempted to say that the separatists have only one agenda of seeing the Kashmir valley liberated. For motivating people for agitating in favour of "Azadi" these separatists rake up certain emotive issues. They agitated when the Election Commission announced the schedule for the Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir. In order to ensure that their call for poll boycott was responded they announced that elections were no substitute for right of self-determination. They agitate violently against the death of a boy in police custody. They campaign against minor or serious case of excesses. But their emphasis on these incidents lasts for a day or so till the separatists find that people have responded to their call for agitation or poll boycott. After that it is the cry for Azadi. Since majority of voters did not respond to their poll boycott call the separatists have decided to keep the kettle of violence and agitation boiling lest they should be politically uprooted. They know that majority of people do not respond to their tantrums now the separatists have,in their calendar, asked shopkeepers to shut their business establishments after midday on one day. On the other it is the turn of transporters to keep their vehicles off the road. On the third it is the turn of women to hold demonstrations. And on next day it is the turn for march to Baramulla so on and so forth, They do not have the teeth to give a call for Kashmir Bandh. Hence they move from one vicinity to another. Whatever ramifications their agitation may have on political and economic structure of the state they have damaged the tourist traffic to Kashmir to the dismay and discomfiture of those millions connected with the tourist trade
