| Code of Professional Ethics for the Teachers | | | SHIV KUMAR PADHA
The teacher (Guru) has always been held at high esteem in India since the origion of civilization. According to the Indian philosophy the teacher (Guru) has been assigned the rank just next to the god and on many occasion guru has been shown above god as per the verse e.g. guru Govind donon khadEY kake lagoon paoon---or Asto maa sadgamay ,Tamso maa jyotirgamay, one who brings us to light from the darkness He has been considerd as the embodiment of all virtues and incarnation of god. Lord Ram and his brothers were sent in the custody of guru Vishisht in his gurukul where they lived life of a common man obeyed their guru and did all that which an ordinary child was supposed to do.They followed the doctrines of their teacher (Guru) to the letter and spirit. Similarly Krishn and Balram,Kaurav and Pandvas, Karn and Bharat received Vidhya from gurus Sandipni ,Dronacharya ,Parshuram and Kanav Rishi respectively and became omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and invincible superhuman of the world. This could be possible only because these gurus had been a: bonanzas of knowledge b: Godly gifted powers c: spiritually rich. The teaching work was never considered as the profession but a mission during those days .They received the honourarium from the royal treasury. Being all powerful and capable of making impossible to possible, adhered strictly to the Code of conduct meant for them because in addition to being rajguru, they were considered as the subjects of the empire and respectable citizens who had their duty towards the society and answerable to them.. As the time passed and the values of the society underwent changes, this profession became a topic of discussion among the masses.Due to the entry of incapable persons as teachers and the erosion of values in the society, this profession is loosing its prestige day by day.The teachers compare themselves with their counterparts in other departments in terms of pays ,perks liberty , facility and responsibility.They forget that teaching is a mission and not a profession wherein some of the freedom and liberty needs be curtailed as per the demand of this noble profession.The teacher is always exposed to the student and the society. A small dereliction on his part can affect the school society and the students .The values of punctuality regularity and discipline are fading away gradually from the schools. The isolation of the schools from the society, lack of individual attention towards the children have made the teachers as aliens among the students Teaching being transparent Job needs a special attention towards dress code, soft conversation and free from unwanted habits which are among the factors for loosing their digniy and integrity. Now it is universally felt that the status of the teaching profession requires to be raised to ensure its dignity and integrity. Accordingly it is considered necessary that there should be be a code of ethics which may be evolved by the teaching community for its guidance. The National Policy On Educaton-1986 has suggested that a nationl level associations of teachers could prepare a code of professional ethic for the teachers and see to its observance. In the light of the policy recommendations, a draft code of profession ethic for teachers was developed in a workshop with the help of representatives of various national level teachers associations. Finally the code was reviewed and finallised in a meeting of eminent educationists held at NIE campus New Delhi from 12-13 march 1986.The code has a brief preamble indicating the goal of education in our country.There are five major areas of professional activities which encompass the work of the teacher. The preamble reads;
1.Recognising that every child has a fundamental right to get education of good quality.
2.Recognising that education should be directed to all round development of the human personality.
3.Realising the need for developing faith in the guiding principles of our polity viz.Democracy, social justice and secularism.
4.Recognising the need to promote our rich cultural heritage ,national awareness ,international understanding and world peace.
5Recognising that teacher being a part and parcel of the social milieu, share the needs and the aspirations of the people.
6.Realising the need for self discipline among the members of the teaching community .7.Realising thatexpert knowledge ,specialized skills and dedication are the prerequisites needed for the profession. As for as teacher’s relations to the students are concerned ,he must be punctual in attending his duty in the school , and should teach the curriculum after making thorough preparation for the lesson to be taught.He should treat all the students with love and affection and be just and impartial to all irrespective of cast creed sex status relgion language and place of birth. The teacher should guide the students in their physical ,intellectual emotional moral development. He should take notice of the individual needs and differences among the students and adapt his teaching accordingly. The teacher should refrain from accepting remuneration for coaching his/her own students. He should also refrain fro divulging confidential information about students except to those who are legitimately entitled to it. The teachers should not incite students against other students, teachers and administration. The teacher should set a standard of dress, speech and behavior worthy of example to the students. To keep the parents of the students abreast with the achievement of their wards, the teachers should establish cordial relations with the parents/guardians and provide information Regularly to parents regarding the attainments and shortfalls of their wards. and also he should refrain from doing anything which may undermine students confidence in their parents or guardians. Since the schools get their population from the society, the school and the teacher should develop the educational institutions as a community and human resource development centre providing knowledge, information and skill .The teacher should strive to understand social problems and help in its solution. They (teachers) should avoid spreading feeling of hatred or enmity among different communities, religious and linguistic groups .The teachers should work actively for national integration and spirit of oneness. The teachers should respect Indian culture and be loyal to the school community, state and nation. In order to remove infighting and conspiracy among the colleagues the teachers should refrain from lodging allegations against colleagues or the Higher authorities and participate in programs of professional growth like seminars, symposia, conferences and self study. Avoid making derogatory statements about colleagues especially in the presence of students officials or parents and also cooprate with the head of the institute colleagues inside and outside the school in both curricular and co curricular activities. The teacher shall; -Always work within the framework of the constitution of the institution. -Recognize the management as the prime source of his sustainable development. There is no doubt, if the teaching community strictly adheres to the code of professional ethics formulated for them, can regain their lost dignity and integrity and work with a new zeal and enthusiasm.
