| Man attempts suicide to evade ‘police torture’ | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 16: A man attempted to end his life by consuming some poisonous substance at Medhar in Poonch district of Jammu allegedly to avoid torture by police, reports said Tuesday. Sources said that Mehmood Ahmad Khan son of Munishi Khan consumed some organic substance to end his life during the intervening night of 15 and 16 June.Reports quoting his family members said that Mehmood was harassed and tortured by DSP operations for last two months. Last night, reports said, a police team raided his house again and sought his detention for questioning in some case. However, the family members and relative resisted and assured police team to send him tomorrow. Reports said that during the night, Mehmood Ahmad consumed poison and was later rushed to hospital where his condition was stated to be critical. His father, Munshi Khan alleged that it was due to the continuous torture that provoked his son to take the extreme step. “He has been severely tortured over last two weeks on the pretext of questioning,” Munish said, reports quoting him as saying said. When Press Bureau of India contacted Station House Officer, Farooq Ahmad Shah, he said, “Mehmood is an Over Ground Worker of Lashker-e-Toiba and the cause of him taking poison is being ascertained.” He said that Police has registered a case, FIR 54/09 under section 309 of RPC.
