| JU: Exam Scam Junction gets NAAC Pat | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 16:Despite being a hub of irregularities, as declared by the CAG after its latest survey of the University of Jammu and a junction of scams the University of Jammu still has managed to bag the ‘A’ Grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University of Jammu has been reassessed and reaccredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as an ‘A’ grade University for the period 2003 to 2008. The report from NAAC indicates that the University has obtained a high score of 3.13 out of 4 which is 78%. According to JU authorities NAAC has highlighted the six major features and strengths of the institution which includes the establishment of quality management system under ISO 9001:2000 certification, Good governance and leadership, establishment of centre for quality assurance, creation of a vibrant ambience to meet knowledge challenges, good progress inspite of functioning in a sensitive environment and the establishment of satellite campuses. In the current scenario the varsity does not seems to be maintaining the standards for such a high rating. Firstly, the University has been rated on the scale of good progress despite functioning in the sensitive environment but it is a matter of fact that this period was one of the most peaceful ones in the recent past. Moreover the city of Jammu always remained peaceful and clam without any affects of terrorism on it. Secondly, the much hyped satellite campuses has earned a lot of weightage to the varsity but the reality remains far from realizing the dream of education at the door steps of the people of the far flung areas of Jammu. Out of the 5 remote campuses which where inaugurated a couple of years ago none of them are completely functional with all the departments. 4 of them do not have a permanently allotted land till now and are run in rented accommodations with ad hoc faculty members. Though the condition of the satellite campuses clearly reflect the apathy of the government official and the university authorities but has managed to get some credit points to the varsity. The University claims to have scaled new heights during the period by laying strong emphasis on institutionalizing and internalizing quality with the establishment of a full fledged Centre for Quality Assurance aimed at establishing Quality Management System in the University and use of Information and Communication (ICT) but the information and communication system used by the University has a question mark on itself when it comes to access by students. Many of the departments of the university do not have proper internet facility and the worth crores Wi-fi system is only accessible by the faculty members and has been kept out of the students reach till date. There is no doubt that the university during this period has transformed itself from a little known provincial University to an institution which has found its place on the academic map of the country and in its post accreditation period i.e 2002 onwards created a niche for itself by becoming the first public university in the country to have its quality management system certified under ISO 9001:2000. But an indispensable element in the status of a University is the academic excellence which is only reflected by the amount of research and development done by the university in the diverse field of science, technology and other subjects along with a fair admission and examination process. There is no doubt that the examination system of the University of Jammu has always remained under question due to its sluggishness and irregularities and till date the University has not been able to find a way out for it. Further the worth crores Computerization of Examination wing project has been tranquil for almost three years now. But even after all the showdown the university witnessed in the recent past the University of Jammu has bagged the ‘A’ grading from the NAAC boasting upon it Quality Assurance Management system but the authorities must realize that the varsity is not all about managing the offices under the ISO standards but achieving excellence in research and development along with establishing transparent admission and examination system to promote its credibility.
