| Security phase out: CM makes beginning at home | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 19 Setting an example for others to follow the Chief Minister of State Omar Abdullah, has replaced his security cover of BSF by the men of the IRP battalions. ‘All the BSF personnel guarding his residence and escorting him during his tours have been removed and in their place men of the IRP battalions have been deployed, sources said. Official sources said that Omar Abdullah was planning to reduce the size of the security cover despite the fact that he enjoys Z Category security cover. He is keen to ensure that deployment of Armed police on security duty is reduced so that more police personnel were available for maintaining law and order and to carry on anti insurgency operations. The Chief Minister has been told that 50 per cent of the men in 26 Armed police battalions have been deployed for providing security cover to ministers, legislators, former minister and former legislators, in service and retired bureaucrats and several other political activists. Official sources also maintained that so long the huge forces of Armed police personnel were deployed for providing security cover to political activists and bureaucrats there would be a vaccum for replacing the troops deployed within the valley which has been the main demand of the PDP and the separatists. Asked whether the state had not raised the police force the sources said that every year additional police battalions have been raised and during the last 20 years the strength of the police force has increased from 30,000 to 1.20 lakh.They said if more than 70 per cent of this police force was available for maintaining law and order "the Government could think of withdrawing troops from the civilian areas.
