| Sumit Grover lifts state chess championship | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 21: Former state champion, Sumit Grover has again lifted the coveted state chess championship title beating Imtiyaz Lone of Srinagar in the deciding sixth round here today. Sumit secured six points winning all his games. With five points, second place went to inspiring Rajinder Wazir, who defeated Ajit Kumar (4). Defending champion and upcoming player, Ritwan Sauntra (5) could not repeat his performance and had to contain himself with third position. Ritwan was upset by Rajinder Wazir in the fourth round this morning. Two of the three participants from Srinagar, Imtiyaz Lone (4.5) and Khalid Amin (4.5), played well and secured fourth and fifth place respectively. To encourage the only female participant in the championship, Aditi Sharma was given away a special prize by the Association. In the valedictory function, Atul Gupta, president and Baldev Raj, general secretary of All J&K Chess Association jointly gave away the prizes to the winners. Joint secretary of the Association, Parminder Kumar was also present. Speaking to the gathering of participants and their parents as also senior players, Atul Gupta said, “A couple of boys, including Ritwan Sauntra, Rajinder Singh and those from Srinagar have improved a lot. Keep on practicing hard, these boys can attain new heights at the national level”. He also suggested the young and upcoming players ways and means to further improve their game.
