Want your BP monitored at GMC…please stand in queue
6/21/2009 11:04:26 PM
SALMAN NIZAMI
JAMMU JUNE 21: In the modern day world of anxiety and work pressures, the sphagmamometer –apparatus used for measuring blood pressure –is emerging as a common gadget and can be spotted easily at homes, offices and cars. However, if you don’t have one and want to get the blood pressure checked at Government Medical College at Jammu, you may well have to spare a day and stand in a queue for your turn. The emergency department of Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Jammu has only single blood pressure measuring apparatus and an outdated resuscitation system. Sources in the hospital told Early Times that the medicos working in the emergency, which provides both surgical and medical care were seen finding the equipment inside the room to check and monitor the blood pressure of the newly admitted patients.” There have been instances when the attendants exchanged verbal duels with each other for getting the apparatus,” a medico working in the emergency expressed anonymity on the conditions described. He said that during the heavy rush of patients, the doctors have to wait for their turn to measure the blood pressure of patients, which is an essential component in the overall examination. “The emergency shall have at least three BP machines to cater to the increasing rush of patients visiting the hospital,” the medico said adding that despite numerous reminders, the administration had failed to redress the grievance.
The emergency, he said, has an outdated resuscitation system. “The district hospitals in the Jammu province possess much more improved resuscitation system than the GMC,” a medico said adding the tertiary care hospital, was in desperate need of the state-of-the-art resuscitation system to provide quality healthcare to the patients.
The causality, the medico said, is also devoid of basic life saving drugs used for treating the patients with injuries or minor ailments. “The emergency is devoid of vital drugs and only has dextrose and syringes in the stock,” the medico said adding that most of the times the attendants of the patients had to purchase the drugs including analgesics and anti-spasmodic from the outside market in the evening.
Referring to cases coming during the night, the medico said the attendants faced immense difficulties in getting the required drugs for treating the patient. “As most of the prescribed drugs are not available in the emergency and at the Institute drug counter, the attendants are seen going from pillar to post in worrisome condition,” he said. The medico said the hospital administration was suggested to invite tenders for establishing and operating an in-house chemist shop so that the drugs are readily available 24 hours, but the advice, according to him had fallen to deaf ears. Citing another example over the pathetic condition of emergency, he said the torches used for examination of patients are without batteries. “The medicos face difficulties in examining the patients without torches,” he added.
