| Ever heard of ‘slum-mall’ –see one in Trikuta Nagar | | | AD Singh Jammu, June 21: Though the slums in the City of Temples are coming up fast and haphazardly but the slum market for them seems to be a well managed Mall. In the heart of the posh area of Jammu near the railway track in the Trikuta Nagar extension area a very well managed shopping complex catering to the slums around the railway line and even the localites of the area is well established. The shopping complex comprises of eighty make shift shops systematically established in an around 2 Kanals land of a local property dealer who charges Rupees 25 per day as rent from each shop holders and one can find almost all the daily need goods in the market but more or less the low end ones. The market is systematically divided into seven lanes and each lane has been allotted to some specific articles. The products available in the market ranges from eateries like shakes, pakoras to boiled eggs and non-vegetarian to fresh vegetables, a range of spices, foot wear, ready made clothing, stitch able clothing, a wide range of bhojpuri and hindi CDs and DVDs, cosmetics and accessories, kitchenware to plastic ware and surprisingly even a wide range of travel bags. The management of the market is so systematic that each lane has been allotted to specific kinds of articles like the first lane comprises of the eateries like the shakes and pakoras where as the next two are for fresh vegetables and spices, the fourth lane offers cosmetics and accessories including travel bags whereas the fifth lane offers a lot of shiny clothing both stitch able and ready made. The side lanes are dedicated to foot wear and entertainment. The discipline of the market is so well managed that even if the shops are vacant in lane the four or five lane they are not allotted to a vegetable sellers or to some eatery and will only be allotted to someone who wants to increase the competition in the garment of the cosmetic market only. The shopping complex came up around three years back after the make shift market on the Trikuta Nagar Railway under pass road, which use to create a huge nuisance on the road, was lifted by the local authorities. Most of the shops in the market are run by non permanent resident of the State but now even many of the localites have started exploring the business prospects over there. According to a shopkeeper in the market, who has been running a shop in the market since its inception, the average per day turnover of the market must be touching a lakh of rupees or more. Though the market is run by the people living in slums and has even been established for them but it has set a live example that even the slum dwellers are disciplined and can be managed if an attempt is made.
