| Over 30 inmates appear in various IGNOU courses in Jammu Jail | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, June 22 : It is well said that life is always a learning process and this is what has been proved by the inmates of District Jail here as over 30 prisoners appeared in examinations for different courses offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) which concluded today.
We have a well constructed IGNOU centre inside the District Jail and likewise in every session, this year also 31 inmates appeared for various courses offered by the University, Rajni Sehgal, Superintendent Jail told UNI.
Ms Sehgal said that this year, 31 inmates appeared in the first year examinations of courses like Masters in Sociology and English besides Tourism and others.
Last year total 20 prisoners including five females appeared for such courses and all of them successfully completed, the Superintendent said adding that woman prisoners preferred Diploma in Food and Nutrition more than appearing in other courses.
The Jail Officer further said that the examination was conducted, which was being monitored by the jail staff and an observer from IGNOU.
The exams started on June 1 and concluded this morning, Mr D K Bhat, Regional Director IGNOU, Jammu personally observed the session and made every requirement including answer sheets, question papers available at the door step, Ms Sehgal said.
The Centre was introduced in the Jail with an aim to promote education so that the inmates after being released, lead a good life and do not feel isolated among the society, she added.
Education is the best medium of rehabilitating human beings, so it was a concept behind introducing the study centre in jail premises to inculcate behavior and bring reformation among the prisoners, Ms Sehgal said.
The IGNOU Centre was set up in 2000 in District Jail Ambphalla and since then over 150 inmates have appeared in various under graduate, post graduate and technical courses.
