| Holy Devikas glory o be restored | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, JUNE 22 : With a view to develop the Holy Devika as a pilgrimage-cum-heritage tourism centre, the modalities for the formulation of integrated project, under Central Financial Assistance, were chalked out in a meeting of officers of different departments held under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria, here today. The comprehensive project under Infrastructure and Destination Development Scheme of holy Devika Devasthan, Udhampur after formulation, would be submitted to Union Ministry of Tourism for its approval and funding. Divisional Town Planner, Jammu, Chief Planning Officer, Udhampur, Assistant Commissioner (R), Executive Engineers of PWD, PDD, Irrigation and officers of other Line Departments were present in the meeting. Detailed discussions were held on various aspects to be incorporated in the project report including cost analysis of pollution control, sewerage disposal system along left and right banks of Devika rivulet, water recharging measures and development of water springs and bowlies, restoration ancient structures, ornamental grill fencing of holy Devika, construction of parking area, toilet blocks, development of bathing ghats, augmentation of water supply to bathing ghats and water stand posts and beautification and lighting of Devika premises. The DDC while addressing the meeting said that the holy Devika holds as an accessible pilgrimage tourism attraction as large numbers of people throng the site for paying their obeisance at ancient temples and performing religious rites. On special occasions like Baisakhi and other festive days thousands of devotees arrive here to have a dip in the holy Devika rivulet, every year, the DDC said. Keeping in view the religious and heritage importance of the Devika site, the DDC asked the officers concerned to formulate comprehensive plan to develop whole premises of Devika for the promotion of pilgrimage-cum-heritage tourism with cost estimates and drawing within 10-days time. The DDC asked the Divisional Town Planner to prepare comprehensive project after getting the adequate feed-back from the officers of concerned departments within a stipulated time frame so that the project could be submitted to Union Ministry concerned for funding under the centrally sponsored “Major Destination Development Scheme” to restore and enhance the pristine glory of holy complex.
