77% of J&K’s villages have cell phones ringing, 40 lakh people have talking device in their pockets

Jammu, June 22: This is what if not a millennium revolution –nearly a decade ago, a telephone in any village would make its owner special and privileged, today more than 77 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir’s villages have the cellphones ringing.
Getting its first cell phone as late as in 2003 –around eight years later then rest of the country –today Jammu and Kashmir is among the fastest growing cell phone circles in the country. With more than 40 lakh subscribers already on the register of various companies, over one-third of state’s total population is armed with talking device in their pockets.
This information was revealed in a meeting chaired by the Chairman Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Dr. J.S. Sarma, while reviewing the functioning of various telecom companies in the state at Srinagar today. The meeting was told that more than 40 lakh subscribers have been covered under mobile services net work in Jammu and Kashmir. Out of a total of 6417 villages, 4977 villages representing 77.5 per cent have been covered under the service through various telecom agencies so far while efforts are on to cover the left out villages.
Sarma urged upon the Telecom operators of various companies operating in J&K for providing cent percent mobile service coverage to the people. He also stressed for monitoring quality of mobile services to the subscribers keeping in view the topography and the difficult terrain of the border state.
Providing of quality mobile service to the people is vital to improve the economy of the state, Sarma said adding that all necessary steps should be taken to expedite the expansion of mobile and landline services in the state. He said preference need to be given to those areas which are still uncovered by the telecom services. He asked the telecom operators to expedite their services and ensure improved mobile services to the people and assured that all possible logical support would be extended to them for providing quality services to the people. He also emphasized for fixing the year wise plans for expanding the mobile connectivity to the left out hilly and remote areas of the state.
The representatives of the companies assured the Chairman that they would take all necessary initiatives to cover the remaining areas of the state under mobile services and upgrade its infrastructure for providing best services to its subscribers.
The telecom operators also raised some points in accelerating their services which also include approval for providing roaming services in prepaid connections, approval for Black Berry to postpaid subscribers, permission for installing towers within 10 km in border areas and providing mobile service facilities in the areas of Dal, Negeen and Khushalsar.
