| Recalcitrant JU shuts doors at RSS, saffron brigade vows to open | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 22: In interesting turn of events, the authorities at the University of Jammu late this evening decided to ‘cancel’ a booking for tomorrow at its famed General Zorawar Singh Auditorium citing reasons that the campus premises cant be used for political purposes –the slated function is a lecture in memory of Bhartiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and is scheduled to be addressed none other than RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and BJP chief Rajnath Singh. There has been an advance booking for the event which is split into two sessions –an academic session between 9:30 and 1:30 and a national remembrance convention between 3:30. The second part is to be addressed by Bhagwat and Singh and this is what the University is fussy about. To make proceedings of entire day appear academic and not political, the University authorities want the first session prolonged to accommodate the second one as well. “We can allow only academic proceedings at the Auditorium and not political”, said the Auditorium administrator DL Choudhary. However, Neeraj Puri, a member of the organizing committee, asserted that there is ‘absolutely’ no change in schedule even as he admitted that the “University authorities tried to play truant due to political pressure but the issue has been sorted out”. Though Syama Prasad Mookerjee is considered as the godfather of Hindu nationalism in India and a leader who championed the cause of integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India but the remembrance convention of the great leader to be held tomorrow at the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu is clearly in the doldrums with the University authorities canceling the session on the National remembrance convention on “J&K, National Integration and the legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee” which was to be organized by Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research foundation along with a National Seminar on- “Security of the Northern Frontiers and National Integration”. The university authorities though have not been clearly putting forward that the session has been cancelled have been putting forward that the session has been amalgamated with the first session and that will be only an academic session and no political sessions in the University campus are allowed. According to the sources the cancellation of the session took place after the Invitation cards of the function were distributed which carried a statement of Syama Prasad Mookerjee delivered by him on January 26, 1952 referring to the then Prime Minister of the State Sheikh Abdullah in protest against the law prohibiting Indian citizens from settling in a state in their own country and the need to carry ID cards and the involvement of heavy weight BJP and RSS leaders in the Convention. Prof. D.L. Choudhary, Administrator of General Zorarwar Singh Auditorium, JU has confirmed this administrative decision that there will be only one prolonged session on the “Security of the Northern Frontiers and National Integration” after which homage will be paid to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and the session will be purely academic and not political. But the JU authorities have not been able to justify the sudden change in the schedule of the function. According to the sources the organizers of the function protested against this decision of the JU authorities after which the JU authorities have resolved that a single prolonged session will be allowed but according to the organizers the sessions will run as earlier scheduled. Though the JU has not been able to justify its decision but as such the cancellation of session on “J&K, National Integration and the legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee” should not be on grounds of being of politically colored session because even in the recent past the University authorities have been accommodating the political heavy weights to organize marriage parties in the campus and even allowed political sessions in the campus. The recent example was the NSUI State Convention which even took place in the Zorawar Singh Auditorium just a couple of months back and the Chief Guest was the Senior Congress leader Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz. In all what is apparent that the reason behind this last moment decision is that either the JU authorities are acting under the pressure from the ruling parties or is not ready to provide a platform for a discussion on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
