Early Times Report KARGIL, Oct 25: The Department of Biotechnology, Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, organised a two-day hands-on training programme and workshop on Basic Plant Tissue Culture Techniques on October 23 and 24, 2026, under the DBT Star College Scheme. The programme aimed to enhance students' understanding of plant tissue culture and provide practical exposure to its applications in biotechnology, plant propagation and research. The inaugural session was graced by Principal GDC Kargil, Dr. Amjad Ali, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Vishal Sharma, Scientist-C, CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, served as the technical expert and resource person. During the first day, Dr. Sharma delivered interactive scientific lectures on the fundamental principles of plant tissue culture, its significance in plant propagation and conservation, its historical development, and the evolution of nutrient media for in vitro plant growth. The sessions were followed by hands-on training in the preparation, sterilisation and storage of culture media. On the second day, participants were introduced to various plant tissue culture techniques, followed by practical training in explant excision using embryos, axillary and terminal buds, cotyledons and leaves. Students also gained practical experience in inoculating explants into prepared culture media under appropriate laboratory conditions. Each participant was given an opportunity to perform the procedures, ensuring an engaging and experiential learning experience. The workshop witnessed the participation of more than 35 undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with faculty members. It provided valuable practical skills and strengthened participants' understanding of plant tissue culture methodologies and their applications in modern biotechnology. The programme concluded with a valedictory session during which certificates were distributed to participants. Students shared their feedback and appreciated the opportunity to gain hands-on experience under the guidance of an expert. The organisers acknowledged the support and encouragement of Principal Dr. Amjad Ali and expressed gratitude to Dr. Vishal Sharma for his valuable guidance and contribution. Mr. Mohd Raza, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, GDC Kargil, also expressed gratitude to Dr. Garima Gupta, Programme Coordinator, DBT Star College Scheme, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, for providing the necessary grants and support for organising the workshop. The successful completion of the programme reflects the Department of Biotechnology, GDC Kargil's continued commitment to promoting experiential learning, strengthening laboratory skills and fostering scientific research among students. |
