‘Vocal for Local’
10/26/2026 10:07:47 PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again urged the people to give importance to local products during the festive season.
In a simple but powerful message PM Modi has conveyed to the people that economic self-reliance begins with the choices consumers make in their everyday lives. “During festivals, we buy many things for our families and loved ones. This time too, when you shop, please prioritise products made by local artisans. Your purchases will encourage them. This affinity of yours will take the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign further, and the further the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign advances, the faster the dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat will be realised,” the Prime Minister said.
India has a rich tradition of handicrafts, handloom products and indigenous manufacturing. From traditional textiles and embroidered fabrics to pottery, woodwork, papier-mâché and handmade decorative items, local artisans preserve skills that have been passed down through generations. Yet, many of them struggle to secure adequate markets, compete with mass-produced goods and receive fair returns for their labour. By choosing locally made products, consumers can help address these challenges and ensure that traditional crafts remain economically viable.
The importance of this appeal is particularly relevant to Jammu and Kashmir, where handicrafts and handloom products form an important part of the region’s cultural identity and economic life.
Festive demand can provide craftsmen with an opportunity to increase their earnings, sustain traditional occupations and generate employment for younger generations. However, the benefits will materialise only when consumers consciously seek authentic local products and are willing to recognise the value of craftsmanship.
The ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative should not remain confined to slogans and ceremonial appeals. It needs to become a sustained public movement supported by consumers, businesses, government departments and e-commerce platforms. Local products must be made more accessible through exhibitions, craft fairs, dedicated retail outlets and digital marketplaces. Artisans also need assistance with modern designs, quality certification, packaging, branding and wider market access.
Ultimately, the success of ‘Vocal for Local’ depends on collective participation. Every locally made gift purchased during the festive season can support a household, preserve a traditional skill and strengthen a small enterprise. If millions of consumers make such choices consistently, their combined impact can be substantial.
The festive season offers an ideal opportunity to translate patriotism into practical action. By supporting local artisans and businesses, citizens can make their celebrations more meaningful while contributing to the larger national goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. A purchase may appear small to an individual, but for an artisan, it can represent income, dignity and hope for a better future.
