| Mohammed Shami: Born in Sahaspur, made in Kolkata | | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Nov 7: Badruddin Siddiqui has always believed that moving to Kolkata was pre-destined as far as his favourite student Mohammed Shami is concerned. Born in UP's small town of Sahaspur in Amroha, it was Uttar Pradesh cricket's loss that became Bengal's gain when the childhood coach decided to make a few phone calls in Kolkata after his ward was ignored for U-19 state team selection. Creating artwork with his malleable wrists, and making the SG, Dukes and Kookaburra red ball talk with perfect seam presentation, the pronounced back-spin became his calling card. "I thought they would pick him for Tests. He did everything that was asked of him. Yesterday, when he called up, I didn't expect he would tell me that "Sir main Test chodh raha hoon (Sir I am retiring from Tests)," Badruddin or Badar bhai, as he is known in UP coaching circles, told PTI as memories kept flooding back. "I am happy that Shami is still playing white ball for Bengal and he will be playing the next IPL. Woh chodh ne wala banda nahi hai. Khelega toh 200 percent dega. That he will still play white ball for Bengal is team's gain. I still feel good that I made a call to my friend and Kolkata based coach Abdul Monayem two decades back," Badar bhai recalled fondly. |
