| Trikuta Nagar multi murder mystery deepening | | EDITORIAL | |
The mystery that shrouds the murder of three members of Chopra family,
along with their domestic servant and driver, on the night intervening
17-18 September, instead on unraveling is getting deeper with the
passage of every day. While the cabinet that met at Srinagar last week
decided to hand over the case of blind murder of five persons to the
CBI, on the ground that the State police had failed to make any break
through even after 72 hours of the crime taking place in the posh
Trikuta Nagar colony of Jammu city, the investigating team setup by
the IGP Jammu is still continuing its investigations. It has summoned
over a dozen suspects and have thoroughly questioned some old business
partners turned rivals of the victim, Rajiv Chopra, a prosperous
cement business magnate as well as some of his relatives. Those
questioned by the investigating police team includes the brother of a
criminal turned politician in Jammu. The sources in the state police
claimed that they were nearing the breakthrough in the case when the
cabinet, in an unprecedented haste transferred the case to the CBI.
The sources in the CBI, however, have stated that they have so far
received no official information, either in writing or verbally about
the case handed over to them. They even contend that it are only the
cases of specific nature, having inter-state contours or where the
involvement and connivance of state police is alleged or where there
is a strong reason to believe that the state police will not be able
to do justice with the case, which are referred to the CBI and which
it takes were for investigation. In the present case of blind murder
of Chopra family and their aides the stage was not yet ripe for the
case to be handed over and taken over by the CBI. In fact handing over
of the case to the CBI in haste rather than inspiring people's
confidence in the exercise, has further raised doubts about the
intension of the authorities. It is widely alleged that since the
state police has found clues of the involvement of some influential
persons in the public life as well as of a senior police officer and
it was only to cover up their connivance that the case has been handed
over to the CBI, thus causing further delay and complications in the
matter. There are loud talks of the victim Mr. Chopra having in the
past ditched his business partners and made huge money by playing
fraud with his associates in the business and that the gruesome murder
of his family was committed as a means of revenge, while his driver
and domestic servant were killed to liquidate the possible eye
witnesses and thus destroy all the evidence. The shifting of the case
to the CBI has only led to heart burning and demoralization in the
state police, who claims to be quite competent to work out the case in
all its totality and bring to justice the culprits. Any how, now when
the cabinet has decided to hand over the case to the CBI, the latter
should be requested to expedite the investigation, make public its
findings at the earliest so that all the rumors and speculations which
have got currency should be set at rest. The cooperation of the local
police will be of highly valuable in the matter, since they can be
expected to have the record of the relations of the victim with his
old partners and rivals as well as his close relatives.
