| Home entertainment and parental control | | | -Anonymous- Since the introduction of cable television in 1992, home entertainment has multiplied by leaps and bounds. Today, we enjoy access to a variety of channels which encompass cartoons, action flicks, daily soaps, news, travel and education. But there is a grave question which seems to be troubling almost every parent - is the content on television safe for their children? For example, the 7/11 blasts in Mumbai were splashed across news channels providing viewers with insights to the gory bloodshed and the helpless victims. These sights left an indelible impression on many young minds across the country. Apart from showcased news, children are also exposed to adult content such as violent films and inappropriate or adult rated programmes. When a parent is in the house, he might be able to control his child's television viewing. But what happens when he steps out? There is a solution. Newer services such as Direct-to-Home (DTH) are providing parents access to a parental lock facility. To elucidate, Tata Sky offers subscribers a unique Parental Control service that empowers parents to regulate what their children watch on television. The Parental control service not only allows an entire channel to be blocked out. Since channels on a DTH service have fixed positions and their frequencies do not change, a parent need not worry about the lock becoming redundant when the cable operator decides to reorganize channel frequencies. Tata Sky's Parental Control service also allows a parent to block only certain programmes on a channel, based on parental rating. To illustrate, on a general entertainment channel, parents can block out movies considered unsuitable for children below the age of 15 years on. Blocked off content can be accessed with a help of a password. If children do try their luck at accessing the content by hacking the password, it is definitely not an easy task. The channel will get completely locked within three failed attempts of punching in the correct password. Further, to unlock the channel only the registered user will be able to do so by call up Tata Sky's helpline numbers. The customer care associates follow stringent verification processes and therefore it will be very tough for a child to get the channel unlocked. Parents can look forward to a safer and more protected television viewing experience for their children.
