| ABOLISHING CLASS TEN EXAMS | | Not bad idea, but J&K asks Sibal to do home work well | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 27: Popularly known as the ‘SMS poet’ for his recent book, Union Humar Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal’s idea of abolishing class ten examinations is being hotly debated in Jammu and Kashmir but the state wants him to do some more home work. Indicating government’s seriousness to bring in substantial reforms in education Sibal recently hinted that the government could abolish the class ten board examinations to lesson the “trauma” on young students. According to reports the Human resource development minister has outlined his Ministry is looking into the feasibility of abolishing the strenuous 10th exams that give sleepless heights to the parents and minor students often resulting in psychological problems before and after the exam. “We need to de-traumatise it and reduce the burden on parents and children. We could, for instance, think of abolishing the Class 10 Board Exam. Why does a child need to appear for a board exam in class 10 if he/she is continuing in the same school?” Sibal said. Jammu and Kashmir Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed is ready to study the idea but strongly feels that class ten examinations is must to check on the progress of students as well as on the performance of the teachers. By conducting 10th board examination it gives a preliminary preparation for the students who are competing for the higher examinations, he said. HRD ministry might have given some alternative method to 10th board examination and it is just a suggestion yet and a debatable one, said Peerzada and wanted the HRD Minister Sibal to circulate his draft plan Education Ministers in the state for their inputs. Former Education Minister Harsh Dev Singh too feels that class ten examinations is essential. “It is not practicable to abolish altogether class ten examinations as this is the stage where student’s progress gets the first check”, he told Early Times. Another former Education Minister Gulchain Singh Charak said that HRD ministry should first consult all the state boards of examination and set the syllabus accordingly. There are different kinds of syllabus in different boards, and firstly it will be implemented only to CBSE. Prof. Noor Ahmad Baba of Kashmir university welcomed this initiative by HRD ministry and said that there are many experiments taking place around the world and by suggesting of abolishing the class 10th board examination is a right step in the right direction and added that there should be alternative like internal examination for the class 10th students. Prof. Yashpal, the renowned scientist has put forward a right kind of suggestion. Prof. A.N. Sadhu of Jammu university was of the view that the examination should not be scrapped altogether as there should be some check on class 10th examination. He suggest that there should be internal examination for the students so that students as well as of teachers performance is recognized. Dheeraj Gupta the student of class 10th said that the examination should not be abolished as it create unneccasary confusion among the aspiring students who want to excel in their field. Class 10th examination is like a preliminary test and it gives us a practice for the class 12th examination on which our future depends. Sheetal Tickkoo another student of class 10th was of the view that she has worked hard for the upcoming examination and by abolishing the class 10th board examination it means the end of life. She further said that upto 9th standard she has remained on top and want to excel in future also. B.R. Nanda, chairperson, Jodhamal public school, while in conversation with the ET correspondent, said that it is too early to comment on scrapping of class X board exams because yet we have not received any guidelines from the HRD ministry and government has given 100 days to Yashpal Committee’s reccomandation on higher education. Though we are bound to implement the guidelines of CBSE, but we have not received it. Zahida Khan, Director, School Education while contacted said, it is premature to comment on this if this will implement, it will be on CBSE, regarding state boards, nothing has yet come as concrete.
