Shopian shutdown completes one month
6/28/2009 11:32:46 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 28: Peaceful protests were held in many parts of South Kashmir’s Shopian district as the shutdown entered 30th consecutive day Sunday against the rape and murder of two young allegedly by troopers last month.
Despite severe restrictions and heavy deployment of troops and police in the district, hundreds of people at Trenz on Sunday took to streets to stage demonstrations against the twin rape and murder of Asiya Jan and her pregnant sister-in-law Nilofer last month allegedly by troopers.
Shouting “Punish the rapists and killers of Asiya and Nilofer,” “Identify the culprits,” “Islam Zindabad” and other reverberating slogans, the protesters were demanding identification and stern punishment for the people responsible for the rape and murder of young women. The protesters marched through the streets of the village before dispersing peacefully.
“We’ll continue to stage peaceful protests till the killers of Asiya and Nilofer are not identified and punished,” Abdur Rashid, a protester told Press Bureau of India.
“Sacking few policemen will not deliver the justice to the families. We want the identity of the perpetrators to be made public at the earliest,” he added.
Several students were thrashed by paramilitary CRPF and police personnel after they left their homes to appear in the class 11th examinations that were to be held Sunday.
The troopers beat the students restricting them to their localities. Several students suffered injuries during the incident.
Meanwhile, all shops, offices, petrol pumps and business establishments remained closed for 30th consecutive day in the district to protest the dual rape and murder.
