Early Times Report
Jammu, June 28: Life in Jammu city and its adjoining areas seem to have become miserable as mercury is continuously hovering around 44 degrees, power and water outage has become a common feature and fears of dry spell are looming large even as forests are catching fire in different areas.
Mercury today rose to season's high at 44.8 degree Celsius as scorching heat wave continued to sweep the winter capital city and low lying areas of Jammu, the Met sources said.
''Maximum temperature in Jammu was today recorded 44.8 degrees while minimum remain at 29.8 degrees,'' a Met source told Early Times. Maximum humidity for the day, he said, was recorded 53 per cent while minimum was 32 per cent.
Life remained affected due to unbearable heat wave. A very less number of vehicles plied on the road as people preferred to stay indoor all the day. However, some clouds hovering the sky in the evening and news about rains in national capital of Delhi have ignited hopes of much needed shower among the people in the 'City of Temples'
Meanwhile, large forest areas are smouldering, billowing huge clouds of smoke which hang over jungles blurring out the blazing sun overhead.
The pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi had to be suspended thrice in the past one month due to bush fires. Trikuta Hills in Reasi district is worst affected. The suffocation was unbearable, said Ajay Verma, a pilgrim from Chandigarh. The smoke enveloped the hills like a blanket and it became a nightmare for the asthmatics, said Ajay whose aged mother, Sumitra had to be hospitalised.
Forest officials said nine out of 10 wildfires are reportedly caused by some human interaction while others are caused by natural events like lightning. The forest department has registered FIRs in each case.
