| Gujjar demand separate Tribal Affairs ministry | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jun 29 : Demanding due share from the coalition National Conference and Congress government, the Gujjars and Bakerwals has said a separate Tribal Affairs ministry in Jammu and Kashmir only would work for the betterment of tribes. ''As the coalition government is due to induct new ministers in the ministry, we the Gujjars and Bakerwals of the state, which constitutes more than 20 per cent of the total population, are demanding a separate ministry of Tribal Affairs,'' President of All India Gujjar Mahasabha Ishfaq-ur-Rehman Poswal told a press conference here this afternoon.
He said Union Ministry for Tribal Affairs has already assured for creation of similar ministry in the state and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also given his consent.
The Ministry, he said, will help to improve the condition of the economically and educationally backward Gujjars and Bakerwal.
He said though Directorate of Tribal Affair has already been established in Jammu and Kashmir by Governor but its functioning is not effective due to lack of Tribal Ministry.
Mr Poswal said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stressed the need for upliftment of the poor people of these communities so that they can achieve their proper share in all fields of the society.
He said most of the states, which has just ten per cent people belonging to different tribes, in India have a separate Ministry.
But, he said, it was unfortunate that the state of Jammu and Kashmir which has more than 35 per cent of the Tribal comprising of Gujjar, Bakerwal, Gaddi, Sippis, ST's of Gurez and other tribes has no such ministry.
However, Mr Poswal appreciated a special package for the tribes of Jammu and Kashmir especially in Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora in Kashmir Province where special recruitment drive was being conducted to appoint 404 personnel in CRPF.
''We have been fighting for the rights of Gujjar and Bakerwals in the state.''
