| At Chenab banks, these friends didn’t prove as friends indeed! | | Another youth drowns, friends flee spot | | SUMIT SHARMA Akhnoor, June 29: A friend in need is a friend indeed, so says the saying but the test of friendship failed twice on banks of mighty Chenab this month when two youth from picnic parties vanished in depth of river and their friends disappeared from the scene. A river bank developed for sightseeing and swimming has become a death trap for many who have been frequenting Jeopata in Akhnoor to beat the summer heat. The local administration or tourist department has kept their no provision of emergency life saving gadgets or any divers to fish out the amateur swimmers. Yet another youth seems to have flown down towards Pakistan as no signs of recovering him could be confirmed till last reports came in. A youth identified as Devanshu Gupta son of Pradeep Gupta of Bakshi Nagar, drowned in river Chenab while swimming but shockingly his friends with whom he had come instead of rescuing him fled from the spot. People of the area informed the police about the incident and a rescue operation was started to fish him out but it was too late. While people of the area have blamed government of the regular incidents occurred in river Chenab. They alleged that government has developed Jeopota river bank area for picnic spot but no swimmer has deputed to avoid any untoward incident. The incident occurred at noon when a group of four persons, two boys and two girls, visited to Chenab river to beat the heat. Eye witnesses told Early Times that the boys were enjoying the swimming while girls were shouting at the bank of the river when suddenly one of them started drowning shouted for help. His friends instead of providing him any help sat in a car and fled from the spot. Locals informed the police and it was during the checking of the cloths of the deceased, his identification was made. The deceased has been identified as Devanshu Gupta son of Pardeep Gupta resident of Bakshi Nagar. Police made his identification from a membership card of MA stadium from his pocket. His family was informed about the incident. Police have registered a case in this regard and investigating the matter. Pertinent to mention here that similar incident was occurred on 3rd June when one Muneera Bano daughter of Ghulam Rasool resident of Kishtwar,an employee of Manda Zoo, was drowned in the same place. She was also accompanied by her four friends identified as Munish Kumar,Munish Bhandar,Puneet and Rakesh Kumar who rushed from the spot in a car bearing registration number JK02D/3738. They were arrested by police en route to Jammu.
