| Soz anguish over Baramulla firing | | | Early Times Report Srinagar , Jun 30 : Strongly condemning the killing of two youths in police firing at Baramulla yesterday, former Union minister and state Congress chief Prof Saifuddin Soz, today welcomed a judicial inquiry into the incident.
In a statement here, Mr Soz said, ''I express my extreme anguish at the use of brutal force by police against the agitated people at Baramulla in which two youths were killed.'' ''I condemn the attitude of the security forces who opened fire at the slightest public reaction to certain happenings,'' he said.
However, at the same time he welcomed the decision of the state government to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Mr Soz said ''on this occasion I raise a basic question with the people that they must ponder over the situation and decide themselves whether agitational approach and hartals can solve their problems.
''Who are running the administration at district and other levels,'' he questioned and said ''those heading, are our own sons and daughters. They have the same feelings as the leaders of the public.'' Mr Soz said people must realise that the first thing that happens in the hartal is termination of contact and free flow of exchange of ideas and that leads to lack the knowledge of truth, which creates an atmosphere of suffocation.
'' I would make a strong appeal to people to give up the approach of hartals as it makes the life of people distraught and causes disruption in civil society, apart from great loss to the trading community, daily wage-earners, the student community in school, college and universisities suffer most,'' he said.
However, he assured the people that ''be it a shameful and deplorable Shopian incident or the unfortunate event at Baramulla, the government shall nail the truth and punish the culprits.''
