| Pakistan denies presence of bin Laden, Mullah Omar on its soil | | | Islamabad, Sept 25 Pakistan has strongly rebutted reports suggesting the presence of al-Qaeda and Taliban leadership on its soil. ''We have no information on the whereabouts of the al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Muhammad Omar,'' foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam said here yesterday. Her remarks came after the controversy triggered by a report published in a regional French newspaper, which quoted French Secret Service report claiming that Saudi Arabia is convinced that bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistani last month. Ms Aslam said the al-Qaeda leadership was based in Afghanistan adding that Taliban is in Afghanistan and the insurgency is deep there, far away from Pakistan's borders. The spokesperson also rejected reports that the recent agreement between the tribesmen in the country’s North Waziristan region and the local authorities was on the behest of the fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Omar. The deal was reached early this month to promote peace in the region, which has seen a series of military operations since early last year that killed more than 200 suspected militants, mostly of Uzbek, Arab, Chechen and Afghan origin.
