Clean up drains, before it rains: Corporators tell JMC

Jammu, July 4: As pre-monsoon showers leave a warning at doors of city residents and the impending rainy season brings in worries of chocked drains, piling up heaps of garbage and potholed roads, the local Corporators today asked the Jammu Municipal Corporation to act before it is too late.
It may be mentioned here that the present elected term of Jammu Municipal Corporation is in its fourth month and Corporators do not want to leave a bad impression among city residents as the face fresh elections few months later. Therefore, at the 37th General House meeting of JMC, the issue of drainage and city beautification dominated the proceedings.
Gandhi Nagar Corporator and senior Congress leader Bansi Lal Gupta strongly advocated war-footing steps to clean up the drains before it rains. He said that the posh locality of Gandhi Nagar which once stood at urban and civic face of town is today home to free flowing garbage. “Ahead of rainy season nallahs should be cleaned up so that water flows smoothly and added that street light at Green Belt Park are in bad condition and the corporation should look into the matter as it creates problems for the pedestrians as well as for the commuters besides the inhabitants of the area”, said Gupta.
Another Corporator and former City Mayor Narinder Singh Raju pulled up the Corporation’s administration for turning blind eye to illegal constructions in the town. He pointed out that completely irrefutable proofs have been provided to the Corporation on illegal constructions with blatant violation of rules but till date no action is taken. He also raised issue of violation of ruled in JMC’s administrative affairs and said that appointing Assistant Sanitation Officer as Transport Officer is against the norms as he does not quality for the post and urged the matter be looked on by the administration.
Corporator Zafar Ahmad said that whole city has been dug up causing un-convenience to general public and due to the situation have become worst during moon season and urged that the matter be taken up with the concerned agencies to repair the roads.
Hardeep Singh Mankotia, corporator said that most of the malis are performing their duties as computer operators due to which parks are not being maintained and suggested that they should be assigned their own duties.
Earlier, amidst hue and cry 37th General House meeting of municipal councilors started in a routine time with addresses by Mayor to the house. Commissioner JMC, Mubarik Singh informed the house that proposal in top of the agenda includes solid waste management, heavy plantations drive to be launched in the monsoon season, 50 CFL lights to be fitted in every ward besides to meet other pending demands and to overcome the shortages and limitations corporater have demanded Rs. 3250 crores from the 13th Financial Commission.
Giving details commissioner informed that a committee has been framed to deal with solid waste management and for the purpose land has been identifies neat Kot Balwal and the task has been entrusted to Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA). He informed to the members that till date what action has been taken by ERA is not clear. He said the issue is of great importance as the city is growing fastly. He said Bio-medical waste coming out of hospitals and nursing homes is a great health hazards. To collect the bio-medico waste, from the sources, private firm should be engaged for the job. He further said corporation is shortly going to have meeting with restaurant owners, and representatives of meat and vegetable market to discuss disposal of garbage on scientific lines.
Corporator Chaman Lal Bhagat, suggested that a site be provided to Rehari vendors as the plying of Reharies in main bazaars is causing inconvenience to the general public. Chaman further said that the sign boards at Akhnoor road near Hindustan pencil factory should be brought down as it violates laws and added that number of community centers have come up without permission. A newly constructed Primary Health centre at Ambica Vihar has created problems for the inhabitant’s problems for the inhabitants of the colony as it has choked the drainage system.
Subash Jandyal, another Corporator, said that one of the tenderer has mentioned in his offer to whom the conract was allotted for repair of sky lift machine that he shall not repair the sky lift machine at Jammu the same should be sent to his unit for repairing of the risk and responsibility of the corporation and showed his concern over accepting conditional tender. He further added that the tenderer is not ready to wave off the said condition due to which repairing of sky lift machine is lingering on for over six months.
Other who highlighted the issues of their respective wards include Uttam Singh, Mahinder Singh Jamwal, Rani Billowria, Sheela Handoo, Rashida Begum, Namrita Sharma, Rajni Sharma, Manmohan Chowdhary, Dwarika Chowdhary, and others.
