PDP reacts to Wakf charges
Early Times report
Jammu, July 4: A war of words seems to have heated up between Kashmir’s two arch political rivals, the Peoples Democratic Party and the National Conference, on an issue which concerns the religious sentiments of Muslims but has more to do with political fortunes of both parties.
Peoples Democratic Party led Government had taken over and handed over to an official body, the Muslim Auqaf Trust managed and run by the National Conference over decades. While taking over by the government, the PDP regime had cited reasons of irregularities.
Striking back, six months after it took over power the National Conference government has now come with list of irregularities which it claims were committed during the PDP regime. Two days after the government made such revelations public, the Peoples Democratic Party has said that the Omar Abdullah government is creating unnecessary noises to divert attention from the ongoing trouble in the Valley.
The PDP spokesman said the establishment of Muslim Wakaf Board was one of the revolutionary measures taken by the government led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to free the religious places of the strangle hold of one family. ‘The Muslim Auqaf Trust’ he said like Sheri Kashmir Medical Institute Trust was run, before the take over as a family estate which was not open to any public scrutiny.
In a poetic verbal jugulary the PDP spokesman personifying the government with Nero said that efforts were being made to tell the world that Rome Rome was not burning.
By enacting a law and deciding to have a Board at the apex level of the Waqf activity which comprised non political personalities drawn from different walks of life the PDP government had given it a true community character, he said.
The spokesman said the establishment of Islamic University of Science and technology under Muslim waqf Board and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University under the Waqf Council are pioneering efforts in the entire sub- continent. similarly Musim Waqf Board took a massive development Programme for Eidgah Srinagar six hundred years after Shahi Hamdan (RA) had donated it to the people of the Valley and much of it had been appropriated by unscrupulous elements with the connivance of Auqaf Trust.
In its brief period under the leadership of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed the Wakaf Board established first nursing College of the state and provided Ambulances to all the major shrines of Kashmir, he said.
A unique social security arrangement was put in place to provide relief to destitute families mainly those had no male bread earner without their having to make rounds of the Board office or to fill the public meetings of the ruling party the spokesman said and added development works were taken up for Dargah Hazrathbal and Khankahi Moula and many other shrines of the valley. He said educational institutions of the Board underwent a complete male over during the period.
The spokesman said the Peoples Democratic Party always tried to avoid raking up issues that could hit hard the ruling party at a time when Kashmir needed to put up a joint front rather than get divided into an anarchic society. However since the NC had now opened the issue on the sensitive subject, the PDP would welcome a formal and in depth debate. Such a debate would be helpful in uncovering the skeletons in the cupboard of NC and Abdullah family. It could also provide an occasion to the ruling family to establish the resource that created the Billion rupees asset of Dhanjiboy building and the Moulana Azad Road estate which was constructed at the same time as the Hazratbal shrine.
About the recruitment made in the Board the spokesman advised Omar Abdullah to have inputs from his own relatives on the Board, the politician who sat on his left who is still facing criminal investigation on charges of bungling in Competent Authority. They will provide him an in depth view since Omar Abdullah himself is a late entrant to the field, said the PDP spokesman.
