Polythene manufacturers hold demonstration demands compensation
7/6/2009 10:56:16 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 6: A massive demonstration was held by the manufacturers and traders of polythene carry bags near Jammu press club to lodge their protest against the government about the hardships being faced by the manufactures due to ban.
Addressing the protestors, spokesman of the association, Rakesh Gupta said that despite repeated pleas to the authorities, including highlighting their problems and demands through a media conference addressed by them over a fortnight ago, the government has not shown any inclination to redress their grievances Gupta added that since the imposition of ban and issue of SRO in this respect, implementing the ban on polythene carry bags, as law abiding and good citizens closed the units, and are incurring heavy cost on account of electric tariff, interest on the loans received from the banks, as well as incurring other incidental costs. Their labourers are lying idle, but the government has not cared to take notice of about 20,000 people directly involved in manufacturing and trade of the item rendered jobless.
Demanding withdrawal of the unimaginative and irrational law imposing ban selectively on polythene bags, the association members demanded compensation for the loses being suffered by them as a result of the ban.
Gupta said that the act banning manufacture, sale and use of polythene bags was passed by the state legislature in a haste, without inviting any objections from the public, particularly those who have stake in the business, even no debate was held in the legislature.
Pawan Shastri another senior member of the association disclosed that there are 50 manufacturing units of polythene carry bags in Jammu alone, providing livelihood to 20,000 people. Their livelihood has been snatched abruptly in one go, without giving them any time to switch over to other avenue of earning their living. He added that the polythene industry in Jammu alone has an investment of Rs 100 crores and units are installed under the government’s policy of industrialization in the state.
Now abrupt ban is causing great hardship, leading many engaged in the business to a point of starvation. They were not allowed even the time to liquidate their already manufactured stocks, not to speak of liquidating the loans taken by them from the banks.
President of the association Rajesh Gupta said that the way in which the government has gone to abruptly impose ban on use, sale and manufacture of polythene bags in the state smacks of regional discrimination against Jammu, since all the 50 odd manufacturing units of polythene carry bags which alone has been banned out of a very large family of plastics, are located in Jammu, while there is hardly any such unit in Kashmir.
Among other who joined the protest demonstration and Dharna included LS Puri, RS Oberai, Vijay Sharma, Sanjay Sobti, Sudhir Kapoor and Raja Singh.
