| CM meets PM, baton being handed over to J&K Police | | | AGENCIES New Delhi, July 6: After Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s meeting with Prime Minister Manhmohan Singh in New Delhi today, the state government has indicated that a decision has been taken to phase out the paramilitary forces and handover the charge to Jammu and Kashmir Police for manning law and order duties. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, here today. In a half hour meeting, the two leaders discussed issues concerning J&K State. They also discussed matters pertaining to Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan (PMRP), development, law–and-order and security-related initiatives. Mr. Abdullah gave in-depth insight to Dr. Singh on the law-and-order situation in the State. Following the discussion, it was decided to augment and strengthen J&K Police in terms of manpower and training in order to reduce presence of the paramilitary forces on law-and-order duties within the State. It was also decided to draw out a comprehensive plan for augmentation, replacement and redeployment of forces within the State in a phased manner with the objective of finally handing over the baton to J&K Police. The Chief Minister highlighted various demands of the State in various sectors particularly power, tourism, surface transport, education, conservation and preservation of ecosystem, skill development and employment of the youth of J&K during the meeting. Abdullah also discussed various political issues pertaining to the State with Dr. Singh. The Prime Minister assured full support of Central government to the Chief Minister in his endeavour for better, progressive and peaceful J&K. Later, the Chief Minister called on the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and discussed with him the law-and-order and security situation in the State wherein issues regarding better coordination between J&K Police and CRPF were also discussed. The Chief Minister informed the Union Home Minister about the initiative started today of joint meeting at the district-level between CRPF and J&K Police top brass conducted by Director General of Police, J&K and ADGP, CRPF, J&K to develop a harmonious, coordinated and effective joint effort to deal with the law-and-order situation as it exists in the State today. The Chief Minister also requested the Home Minister to sensitize CRPF about the present situation in the State which is increasingly a law-and-order situation. He also requested that additional modern equipment may be deployed for better crowd control to maintain law and order Abdullah informed Chidambaram that while there was no place for excessive and arbitrary use of force, the State Government is determined to take strict action under law against those who indulge in stone-pelting or other such activities which disturb law and order. He asserted that his Government has given clear instructions to the law-and-order machinery of the State that stringent and strict action should be taken against those who are directly or indirectly involved in vitiating normalcy in the State. Chidambaram assured Chief Minister of his full cooperation in addressing various issues concerning J&K.
