| We are being targeted: CRPF | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 7, 2009: The CRPF deployed for counter-insurgency duties in Jammu and Kashmir have complained of attempts being made to target them exposing its jawans to maximum risk during its fight against militancy. A senior CRPF official has written to para-military headquarters detailing how some elements were trying to target the jawans of the force especially in North Kashmir, official sources said on Tuesday. According to the sources, the official of the rank of Inspector General in his three-page letter cited an incident where CRPF jawans survived an attempt by a mob in Sopore in North Kashmir to electrocute them. In some cases, boiling water, hot rice water (starch) and Molotov cocktail (petrol bomb) have been thrown on CRPF jawans resulting in serious burn injuries to the jawans, the sources alleged, adding some-anti-national elements were behind this. The CRPF, after dashing off its complaint to its headquarters, have asked Jammu and Kashmir Police to be in the forefront while dealing with any civilian clashes and that the para-military personnel would only be providing assistance. While there was no word officialy from the Jammu and Kashmir government, state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a meeting with the top brass of police and CRPF and asked them to jointly visit all districts of the valley to assess the situation, the sources said. Following this, Director General of state Police Kuldeep Khoda and Additional DG of CRPF Karamvir Singh visited various parts of the state to ensure better coordination, the sources said.
