| Acute water scarcity hits Katra town | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jul 8 : Acute shortage of water has added to the miseries of pilgrims visiting the world-revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra town in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. As the entire Jammu region is reeling under intense heat wave conditions, the devotees reaching the base camp of Katra are facing problems due to non-availability of adequate potable water in the town as well as at the Bhawan, located in Trikuta Hills about 13 km from the holy town. ‘’Daily requirement of water at Bhawan is approximately 14 lakh gallon but only 9.5 lakh gallon is being supplied, which has created an acute water shortage for devotees,’’ an official source said. About four lakh gallon of water is being lifted from Dabaddi, two lakh gallon from Risyani Cave and one lakh gallon from Ban Ganga, but water shortage has affected this routine supply in the area, the official source added.Similarly, approximately 12 lakh gallon of water is daily requirement of Katra town while at present it is getting only five lakh gallon, which is making life miserable, sources said. Confirming the shortage of water in the area, an official spokesman said, ''Two tube wells, being constructed at Risyani Cave, would help in meeting the problem of water shortage once they become functional in December this year.'' ''Administration is seriously thinking over the water shortage in the area and Rs 73 crore Dhansar Project in Katra, will solve the crisis,’’ the spokesman asserted. Not only pilgrims and local residents, the aquatic animals and wildlife in natural springs and streams in Katra have also been affected badly due to the scarcity of water.
